Two students of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology have developed a silencer for two-wheelers that can reduce carbon emission by 50 per cent.

The two – Sneha R.K. (Bio-Technology, third year) and Santhanam Vikram S (final year Automobile Engineering) – exhibited their first prototype at the national level inter-college festival Futura’17 held at their college premises.

“The silencer has two filters inside – xiaolite and activated carbon. The filters reduce carbon emissions by half,” Sneha said. The students have tested it on vehicles and the results have been successful. “We did emission test on vehicles before and after attaching this and the carbon emissions was just half of the normal rate. Also, there was an increase in oxygen content in the emissions,” she added.

“There will be no reduction in the mileage because of the silencer. It can run up to 3000 kilometers. Only the filters need to be changed later which would cost approximately Rs. 300, ” said Santhanam Vikram.

The cost of making on a silencer is approximately between Rs.1000 and 1200. “We are looking for funding and will be applying for patent soon,” they said.
