Stupendous sixth term victory for the BJP against all odds, anti-incumbency factor and consolidation of castiest groups ranged against them, is for sure an indicator of good tidings for the party in the 2019 general elections to Lok Sabha.

Equally certain is that the shadow of Gujarat polls could be seen on the way politics in Tamil Nadu could evolve. It is in this context should the recent courtesy call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi should be seen.

It has not escaped the notice of the political analysts here that the Modi-Shah combine was forward could be flexible when it came to Tamil Nadu and new alignments could take shape in the run up to the elections.

In this context, the ongoing RK Nagar assembly constituency bye poll should be viewed. A DMK victory here, not entirely unlikely given the extreme polarisation taking place within the AIADMK with two factions fighting it out.

The official AIADMK, the EPS-OPS faction leaders even allege that the Dinakaran side was colluding with the DMK even.

A DMK victory here in the RK Nagar bye poll, a seat which Jayalalithaa won in 2016 general elections with a margin of nearly 40000 votes, could put the opposition party in the driver’s seat in Tamil Nadu. So it is not entirely not improbable that the BJP could be eyeing the DMK as well when it comes to making strategic alliances for the 2019 general elections, felt an analyst.

In the past, the DMK was a part of the NDA and its government under Atal Behari Vajpayee.

DMK working President MK Stalin has congratulated the prime minister Narendra Modi on his party’s victory in Gujarat, a battle that was bitterly fought with the Congress under Rahul Gandhi mounting a ferocious campaign. And for wresting Himachal Pradesh from Congress.

To be sure, even chief minister Edapaddi Palaniswami congratulated the prime minister on his party’s victory in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan said it was a victory of development against dynasty, referring to the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress party president. Demonetisation or GST have not dented the BJP and in fact people have given the BJP more power, she said adding that even in 2019, the BJP will emerge victorious.
