Lorry owners and the Government have suffered a loss of Rs.15 crores and business transaction losses have touched Rs.500 crores in Coimbatore alone, according to the Coimbatore district Lorry Owners Association, even as the nationwide lorry strike enters its fourth day today.

The strike, which, among its demands, wanted the removal of toll fee all over the country, has affected the movement of essential and perishable commodities including vegetables and eggs, etc. Readymade goods worth more than Rs.10 crores are piling up in neighbouring Tirupur. These goods were heading to the Kochi and Tuticorin ports to be sent abroad.

Meanwhile, tea leaves worth Rs.2 crores, are stockpiling in the Nilgiris. On normal days, more than 200 trucks would take these products to other states.

The situation is likely to get worse with trucks transporting LPG and petroleum products expected to join the strike soon.
