KOCHI: DGP Nirmal Chandra Asthana has been appointed as the new Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau of Kerala.

An IPS officer of 1986 batch, Asthana is currently on Central deputation since March, 2017.

Loknath Behra, DGP (Law and Order) was holding additional charge as Vigilance Director after Jacob Thomas was transferred fro the post in March last year.

Asthana’s appointment comes against the background of a report based on an RTI document that the State Government appointed Behra as Vigilance chief without seeking permission from the Centre.

The Kerala High Court had pulled up the State Government for not appointing a DGP with independent charge of the Vigilance department.

The Kerala had sought the Centre’s permission to ‘downgrade’ the Vigilance chief rank from DGP to ADGP, which was not considered.
