COIMBATORE: Being a nurse is the second big thing in the world, the first one being a mother, according to Dr. G. Bakthavatsalam, Chairman and Managing Director of K.G. Hospital.

Participating in the Women’s Day celebrations in the hospital on Thursday. Dr. Bakthavatsalam said nurses play a crucial role in the functioning of hospital. “A doctor saves the patient within few minutes or hours. But it is a nurse who spends maximum time with the patient and helps him recover from his illness completely,” he said.

According to him, there 950 people working in the hospital, which includes a large number of women – doctors, nurses, para-medics, technicians and sanitary workers.

“Women can manage even a large organisation. They play multiple roles – daughter, wife, mother, daughter-in-law and also a working professional. Multi-tasking comes naturally for them. They are like angels. We have 540 angels here who work round the clock for the welfare of the patients and to make them feel at home,” Dr. Bakthavatsalam said.

On the crucial role being played by sanitary staff, he said, “they play a silent but important role wherever they are. When the hospital and the toilets are not clean, it becomes a place to contract various diseases.”
