Road fatalities in Kerala drop by 156 to 4,131 in 2017

Kochi: A total of 4,131 persons were killed in 38,470 road accidents in Kerala in 2017. This was less by 156 in the previous year in 2016 when the deaths were 4,287.

Kerala’s share in mishaps in the country is 8.2 per cent. There are 275 accident prone zones where accidents occur regularly. Out of them, 159 are on National Highways and the rest on State highways and other roads.

The accident prone areas were brought down from 355 in 2016, according to the report prepared by NATPACK which has been submitted to the Government. Ernakulam district tops with maximum risk zones of 75 followed by Malappuram 71 and Alappuzha 57.

Even as the share of National Highways and State Highways in the State is only nine per cent, most of the accidents occur on these roads.
