Mariamman deity in Coimbatore decorated with currency worth Rs 5cr

Coimbatore : The presiding deity of Mariamman in a temple in Kattur in the city was decorated with Rs 5 crore worth currency notes as part of Tamil New Year today.

The money was collected from people in the vicinity in denominations of Rs 2,000, Rs 500 and Rs 200 and Rs 100 to decorate the deity and sanctum sanctorum walls. Last year the deity was decorated with currency worth Rs 3 crore.

Besides, gold and diamonds ornaments worth lakhs also formed part of decoration, temple sources said. In view of the huge money, tight security had been provided around the temple and the money would be returned to the devotees, they said.

Meanwhile, the largest Ganesha Idol in Asia at Puliakulam in the city was decorated with various types of fruits including apple, mango, banana, lemon, jackfruit and pomegranate, weighing nearly 2 tonnes and also grass varieties.

A large number of devotees are thronging both the temples to have a darshan of specially decorated deities.
