PSG introduces latest technology in epilepsy treatment

Coimbatore: PSG Institute of Medical Sciences, Research and Hospitals has introduced advanced technology in treating epilepsy.
Neurologist and epileptologist Dr Rajesh Shankar Iyer along with institute Dean Dr S Ramalingam and Dr P Rajkumar told medipersons that the PSG Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Centre would have state-of-the-art facilities for treating epileptic patients.
Dr Iyer said, “PSG has comprehensive epilepsy care centre where we check all epilepsy patients. During the process we figure out who requires surgery and who can be cured with just medicines.”
By doing three complex epilepsy surgeries, PSG-IMSR along with comprehensive epilepsy care centre became the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu.

Surgeries were performed on a nine-year-old girl, a 19-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man all of whom had become seizure-free for the past three months, following surgery. The patients were put through a surgical procedure called hemispherotomy where one half of the brain was disconnected from the rest.
The young girl had to leave school because she was affected by a rare form of epilepsy called Rasmussen’s encephalitis which affected only one half of the brain. She suffered recurrent fits for two years until the surgery improved her quality of life.
The other to had severe scarring on the right side of the brain causing difficulty in learning and employment. Successful surgery had now given them new opportunities.
Epilepsy is a nervous system which affects 5-10 persons per 1,000 of which 30 per cent failed to respond to medications and were categorised as having medically refractory epilepsy. The patients go through pre-surgical evaluation and video EEG studies prior surgery.
