Kochi: Cash-strapped KSRTC has shown doors to 450 staff for going on leave for more than five years against the norms of the organisation.

The new Chairman and Managing Director, Tomin J Thachankery, has given direction to authorities concerned to prepare a list of workers who are on long leave, it was reported.

Tomin’s predecessor A Hemachandran had accepted resignation letters of 606 staff who had put in their papers after getting better jobs.

Shockingly, the applications of resignation of these workers were pending before the management for a long time as the authorities were reluctant to act on it.

There are 34,966 permanent employees in KSRTC. Each bus is managed by 8.7 workers. Meanwhile, Tomin said conductors and drivers would be empowered to take the decision to cancel trips which were not profitable.

KSRTC should get an income of Rs 31 per kilometre to be viable, he said at the Palakkad depot. Staff should have the determination and physical ability to work hard to sustain KSRTC which needed only one-third of the existing staff to operate it, he said.

KSRTC could no longer show any humanitarian consideration to feed employees unfit to work.

Majority of staff were willing to work and revive KSRTC and take it to a position to pay salaries to the workers at the month-end. Some forces had put KSRTC in shackles which should be broken.
