Bengaluru: Karnataka is going to choose its next government on May 12 amid rumours that the EVMs could be hacked. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the voters are the EVMs are safe.
On the other hand, the techies of Bengaluru have their own interpretations on the issue of EVM hacking. According to Whitefield-based techie Sachin Shivanand, unless you have physical contact with the machine, it is not possible to hack it. “Actually the EVMs are not connected to internet.
Unless and until you have Wi-Fi connections or SIM or any external connection, it is not at all possible to have access to EVMs,” he said. Sachin Shivanand is sure that the EVMs cannot be connected with any external network, and hence the theory of hacking is bogus.

Another techie Deepankar Das said the EVMs come with pre-programmed embedded software built into the system and to make any changes one has to open the machine. “If you tamper it, authorities will come to know easily. EVMs are tested at various levels in the presence of all party representatives.
Therefore, even tampering the machine is also difficult,” he opined. Moreover, thousands of machines are used during elections. It is not possible to physically tamper all the EVMs as it not only requires a huge manpower, but also expertise, Das said. The EC has even introduced VVPAT system in order to gain the confidence of voters.
“If at all the candidate expresses his doubt on any particular EVM, he can tally the EVM results with the VVPAT results,” he said, adding that the EVM hacking theory has no basis. “Election Commission is doing its best to gain voters’ confidence. Otherwise why would have they introduced VVPAT system,” he questioned.
In 2010 May, scientists at University of Michigan claimed that they have developed a technique to hack into Indian electronic voting machines. The researchers said that after connecting a home-made device to a machine, they were able to change results by sending text messages from a mobile.
But they would need to install their microchips on voting machines for their system to have any impact, which is hardly possible as thousands of EVMs are used during elections, according to Bengaluru’s tech experts.
