Sabarimala supreme tantri Kantararu Maheshwararu no more

Thiruvananthapuram: The supreme tantri of Sabarimala, Brahmasri Kantararu Maheshwararu, 91, passed away at Chengannur today.

Belonging to Thazhamon Madom, the Tantri was undergoing treatment for old age ailments. Maheshwararu started tantric activities at the age of 17 under Kantararu Shankaruru who was his father Kantaruru Parameshwaruru’s younger brother.

Legend has it that the members of the Madom came to this region from Andhra during the time of Parasuram. Kantararu Shankaruru had consecrated the present idol of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala in 1951 after the fire in 1950 that destroyed the hill shrine.

Kantararu Maheshwararu acted as auxiliary priest then. The consecration of Maaligapurathu Durga temple at Sabarimala was done by him after he became supreme tantri.

Born on July 28, 1927, he learnt the basics of tantras from his father who passed away when he was very young.

He learnt Sanskrit from experts at home. He had to his credit consecration of 300 temples inside and outside Kerala, while he held the right to perform tantras in 700 temples.

He is survived by ‌wife and three children. Thazhamon Madom is the traditional priest family having exclusive powers over the religious matters of Sabarimala temple.
