Now, not just the bribe-takers but bribe-givers will also be penalised as the Parliament passed a bill to amend the 1998 anti-graft law. The stringent new law will enhance transparency and accountability of the government.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh who moved the bill in the Lower House told the house that the measure ensures that honest officers are not harassed, reports NDTV.

The bill reflects Narendra Modi government’s Zero tolerance towards corruption. Under the new law, prior approval for investigation – if necessary – would be required for all government officers and also immunity from arrests will be available to all officials. Earlier, the provision was restricted for joint secretary and above, reports NDTV.

However, during the debate, MP APJ Reddy (TRS) wondered whether the bill would discourage whistleblowers and sought to get to the root of the menace. The Bill proposes to punish bribe-takers up to seven years of imprisonment.
