A case has been filed against a Sulur-based power loom unit for violating the Handlooms Reservation Act 1985. The mill had been producing a category of dhoti that is reserved exclusively for the handloom sector.

Officials of the Excise and Revenue departments carried out a surprise raid on a power loom unit yesterday in Vagarayapalayam near Sulur. They found that the unit was producing grey cotton bordered dhotis, which are reserved for the handloom sector.

Officials filed a complaint with the Karumathampatti police, who have registered a case against the power loom unit’s owner, Gnanasekharan.

Under the Handlooms Reservation Act, 11 categories of clothes and dress material have been set aside for the handloom sector. Power loom units that violate these provisions are liable for punishment.
