Condemning the Coimbatore Corporation for not completing the Rail Over Bridge (ROB) near the SIHS Colony in Singanallur, residents of the area staged a road-roko protest on Friday.

According to sources, the state government had set aside Rs.30 crores in 2011 to construct an ROB in the area as the railway crossing was creating traffic congestion. Though the works were started immediately after the funds were granted, it has not yet been completed.

The Corporation had also passed a resolution to build a causeway across the railway line. Agitated with the resolution, as many as 100 residents of the area staged a road roko demanding the cancellation of the resolution and completion of the ROB construction.

The protesters were detained by the police when they refused to clear the road. They were held in a hall. But, they continued to protest inside the hall by refusing to eat the food that was provided to them. They were later released in the evening. The residents said that they will hoist black flags atop all the houses in the area on December 5 if the construction is not completed soon.
