SC panel asks police to file chargesheet in beheading case

Coimbatore : National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) has suo moto taken up the case of the beheading of teenager Dalit girl in a village near Athur in Salem District in Tamil Nadu. It has directed filing of a chargesheet in 15 days, commission vice-chairman L Murugan said on Thursday.

He reporters on the sidelines of a function to distribute protective gears to sanitation workers that NCSC had taken up the case and sent notices to the District Collector and police department for followup.

The commission directed the police department to file the chargesheet against the 27-year-old accused and take steps to detain him under Goondas Act and decide the compensation to be paid to the relatives, he said..

Though the commission was not able to identify the panchami lands given to the Scheduled Castes since 1920, he said about 1.8 lakh cents had been identified and notices issued to encroachers in Salem, Coimbatore and Kanchipuram districts.

Compared to Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the condition of Adi Dravida hostels was very poor in Tamil Nadu and he had written to the Government, he added.
