The Tamil Nadu police on Monday banned the use of mobile phone by constables and inspectors on important duties like VIP security and bandobast duties.

A decision banning use of cellphone was taken after it was discovered that many officials were using the hand-held phones for watsapp that distracted them from duties. Even distraction for a second can prove crucial and sensitive times.

In an official communication from the police headquarters, only police personnel above the rank of assistant sub inspectors would be allowed to use mobile phones while on duty. Cell phone, while on duty, must be used for official purposes only, the directive to all police personnel said.

“Cell phones should not be used by other ranks during important duties such as law and order, VVIP bandobast, temple and festival bandobast,” the directive said.

The unit officers may decide on time and space where the mobiles can be used and where they cannot be used by subordinate officers.
