Coimbatore : An Israeli expert in water management and desalination has suggested effective water management involving recycling using membrane technology to tide over the pollution in the Ganga.

Prof Yoram Oren from Ben-Gurion University of Negev in Israel visited Karunya Institute of Technology here for a seminar on ‘Water Conservation and Recovery issues in India’ recently. He said the world had sufficient volume of water for human usage. However, improper water management and water pollution had led to water shortage and scarcity.

Various factors such as paper and pulp industry, tanneries and textile dyeing units were responsible for such a situation, he said.

These industries used large volume of water and toxic chemicals like chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, lime and green alcohol, leading to contamination and in turn to costly water management, a statement from the Institute said.

In Israel, industries had very good water treatment process with zero discharge of chemicals, he pointed out On the Ganga pollution, Oren suggested remedial measures based on effective water management involving recycling using membrane technology.
