Unable to bear loss of son, elderly couple commit suicide by immolating

Coimbatore : Dejected being orphaned by the death of their only son, an elderly couple comitted suicide by setting them ablaze in their house in Velliyankadu near Kangeyam in Tirupur district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The 61-year old Thangamuthu, a retired Assistant  at Village office and his wife Nagamani (55) were living with their son, whose wife deserted, him and the grandson Tarun, police said.

Their son, Chandrasekhar died due to illness six months ago and from then onwards the couple appeared  dejected.

Unable to bear the tragedy, the couple poured kerosene on them and set afire around 6 AM, police said.

Hearing their scream, Tarun ran towards them and attempted to douse the fire. However, he was pushed down by the couple. Some neighbours rushed to the house and managed to put off the fire.

However, both the husband and wife died at the spot, while Tarun is being treated for minor burn injuries.

Police rushed to the house and retrieved the bodies and sent them for postmortem and further investigations on, they said.
