With the 66th Republic Day fast approaching, the production and sales of the national flag have started to increase dramatically at Town Hall’s Gandhiji Khadi Store.

For the past forty years, Gandhiji Khadi Store has been making the national flag, and flags of political parties. These flags are then transported to various districts in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Pondicherry. The prices start from Rs.6 to Rs.2500.

According to R. Rajendran, an employee, “I have been working for the past 30 years in the Gandhiji Khadi store. The sale of national flags is high during Republic Day and Independence Day. More than 4 lakh flags were sold between Independence Day last year and this year’s Republic Day. The sales peaked on the birthday of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who died last year.”

In addition to national and political flag, the store also produces fabric material required for temple festivals, and textile material for modern use. With the state legislative assembly elections only a few months away, the store is already busy manufacturing flags of various political parties.
