The Kongunadu Jananayaka Katchi (KJK) demanded the Coimbatore Corporation to prevent the discharge of sewage water into the Rajavaikal of Noyyal river in the city to ensure it remained a safe ground water source for residential areas and agricultural lands along the canal.

In a statement, KJK Founder President G.K. Nagaraj, said: “The Rajavaikal, which is the major water source for the Singanallur tank and Vellalaur tank, has become turned like sewer due to the uncontrolled sewage water discharge into the canal from nearby commercial establishments and residents for the past few years. The sewage water is being let out directly into the canal through pipelines from buildings and construction sites.”

According to him, the canal created a permanent stink and has also resulted in health hazards for the nearby residents due to dumping of chemical waste and meat wastes from outlets.

“About 1,500 bore wells along the Rajavaikal canal from Nanjundapuram to Vellalur were polluted, as the canal is the ground water source for them. It affects thousands of residents and farmers in the area. Cattle rearing and cultivation of coconut and vegetables are also affected because of polluted ground water.”

He urged Coimbatore Corporation to take steps to revive the Rajavaikal by preventing the discharge of sewage into the canal. He also warned that the Party would organise a series of agitations to press the demand, and draw the attention of Coimbatore Corporation and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
