Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister today said that the state will soon file an interim petition in the Supreme Court against Karnataka to implement the final order of the Cauvery Tribunal. Jayalalithaa also said that water from the Mettur dam could not be released to the farmers on June 12 due to insufficient levels in the reservoir.

Promising to protect the state’s interest in the Cauvery issue, the Chief Minister pointed out that, contrary to the tribunal’s orders, Karnataka did not release water in June-July. She added that neither Karnataka, nor the centre replied to her letters.

Assuring the members of the state assembly that preventing Karnataka from constructing a dam at Mekedatu was one of her main agendas, Jayalalithaa announced that a subsidy of Rs.64.30 crores will be given to the farmers if water is not made available for cultivation.

The proposed dam at Mekedatu over Cauvery assumes special significance and urgency after the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced it during his Independence Day speech.
