Plea to protect Bhavani river

Around 200 members of the Save Bhavani Trust and general public on Thursday staged a peaceful demonstration appealing to the public to protect the Bhavani river, considered to be lifeline of Mettupalayam.

An initiative of the Mettupalayam-based Save Bhavani Trust, the demo was held to draw the attention of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu Governments to prevent the construction of the proposed dam across the river. “We want to create the awareness among the public not to pollute the river. We also wish to attract the attention of the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the Centre to do the needful to prevent the construction of the proposed dam along the river,” spokesperson of Save Bhavani Trust told Covai Post. Participants held placards and distributed pamphlets urging the public to protect river and refrain from polluting it.

Several members also took out a rally in two-wheelers. The rally that started from CTC bus stand, passed through Chakravarty junction, Sivam theatre road, Amman Kovil street, MMC office road and Annaji Road and culminated at the Mettupalayam bus stand.
