Chennai: The Madras High Court today refused to lift its August 18 order banning camel slaughter in Tamil Nadu. The court turned down a new Public Interest Litigation that sought a direction to authorities to create slaughter facilities in the state.

In addition to rejecting the PIL, filed a few days ahead of Bakrid, the court has also given strict directions to the state government to ensure that the orders are followed.

Earlier, in August, the High Court declined to grant permission for camel slaughter in Tamil Nadu, because the state did not have facilities to slaughter camels. The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan said today that it could not entertain petitions that sought to circumvent the previous orders.
