With mystery surrounding the death of Ramkumar, alleged killer of Infosys techie Swathi, a retired DIG of prisons has said that security lapse was one of the reasons behind Ramkumar’s reported suicide.

Talking to the Covai Post, the former official, who did not want to be named, said that if those on duty at the Puzhal jail had been more vigilant, the suicide could have been prevented. “These kind of people always wait for opportunities to kill themselves. Those outside the cell should try and talk to them and divert their attention towards other things,” he said.

He further added that since the person who tried to attempt on his life earlier also he would make use of any given chance. “Such prisoners need to be counselled and monitored continuously. They should never be left alone until they leave the prison for good or are completely diverted from the thought,” he said.

“The role of other prisoners and officials is crucial in getting his mind diverted from suicidal thoughts,” he added.

Notably the police claimed that Ramkumar, who went to drink water, broke the switch box open, pulled out the wire and bit before others could stop him. He was reportedly declared brought dead by the doctors at the Royapettah Hospital.
