Farmer arrested for poisoning peacocks to death

Police today arrested a farmer near Udumalpet in Tirupur district for poisoning peacocks to death.

Based on a complaint from forest department that 15 peacocks were found dead in the maize farm a week ago, police registered a case against the farmer, Vijayasekaran of Periyavalavadi area, who was absconding since the incident.

Police managed to trace him last night and produced before the Udumalpet Magistrate court today, who remanded him to 15 days custody.

Vijayasekaran is said to have confessed that he had mixed poison with maize seeds to kill the birds, since peacocks used to destroy the seeds sown in the field.
