Thanjavur: Tension prevailed for a while in the district headquarters government hospital in Kumbakonam as irate relatives of a woman, mother of two children who died after undergoing sterilization surgery, besieged the hospital today demanding action against the doctors responsible for her death and disbursement of Rs 25 lakhs as compensation to her family.

Loganayaki (25), wife of Ajith and resident of Aatrukarai Street in Kallur village of Kumbakonam taluk, gave birth to a male child just three months ago. As she already had a female child aged about one and a half years, she decided to undergo sterilization surgery.

Loganayaki was admitted to the district headquarters government hospital in Kumbakonam on November 15. She underwent the sterilization surgery on Saturday during which her condition became critical. She was referred to and rushed to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. However, she died a few minutes after being admitted to TMCH.

Irate relatives of Loganayaki alleged that she died due to negligence on the part of the doctors who performed the sterilization surgery and besieged the government hospital in Kumbakonam today demanding action against the doctors responsible. They also urged the government to immediately distribute Rs 25 lakhs as compensation to her family.

As the agitators also squatted on the road pressing their demands, vehicular traffic in the area was disrupted for about an hour. On being informed, revenue and police officials rushed there, held talks with the agitators and persuaded them to call off their stir.
