As the farm gate price of ragi, one of the most important millets, would hover around Rs. 20 to Rs. 22 per kg during harvest, farmers are advised to take appropriate sowing decision on the advisory.

The fresh arrivals of ragi will start at the end of December and stored crop will serve round the year, even as the production was declined due to erratic monsoon during the current season.

In this situation, the Price Forecasting Scheme in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University studied the price behaviour in Tindivanam regulated market and the results revealed that the prices would cheer the farmers, as there would be marginal upward trend.

Moreover increasing demand, will give better price in the coming months, it said.

Ragi was cultivated in an area of 1.20 million hectare with a production of 1.79 million tonnes during 2015-16 in India, while the total cultivated area in Tamil Nadu being 0.11 million hectare with 0.25 million tonnes of production.
