Once you decide to do something different, you’ve got to do it even if people around you think it’s nonsensical.

In 2006, Kochi-based photographer Richard Antony started his career as graphic designer; in 2008 he ventured into wedding photography. Richard didn’t restrict himself to one field, he kept on exploring and learning. Today he does photo shoots for renowned advertising agencies in the south. Recently he did the stills for the Malayalam movie “Annmariya Kalippilannu” (2016) and is doing stills for the upcoming “Alamara.”

One more feather in his cap is he is a renowned underwater photographer specialising in wedding and fashion shoots. In 2013, nobody approved of his idea, but he learnt about it online and got some expert inputs.

Richard talks to Covai Post about how he established himself as an underwater fashion and wedding photographer.

“Initially it was difficult to get a client to agree to underwater photo shoots. But in 2014, I got my first client – a young couple who wanted to do something different for their wedding. The shoot went well, and the output was satisfying for me and my clients. Since then, 18 clients have opted for underwater pre- and post-wedding shoots.”

About challenges, he says, “Breathing is the main concern. 50 secs is the maximum a person can hold his breath. I have to take the shot within 40 secs. Clients are briefed on how to pose because the action and click happens in a few seconds.”

Richard shoots mostly in swimming pools as clear water enhances the frame. The camera he uses is a Canon Mark III with an underwater camera housing, costing around 5 lakhs.

Having already done underwater shoots with Malayalam actors like Rajeev Pillai and Sunny Wayne, he says, “I would like to do a calendar featuring underwater photos with Dulquer Salmaan, Rima Kallingal, Isha Talwar and a few others.”
