The Government of India is on the verge of launching its own operating system for its official use, this month. The Operating System will be called BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions). The latest version has been developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing).

BOSS is a free and an open source Linux distribution and is said to be the key deliverable of NRCFOSS (National Resource Center for Free and Open Source Software), originally developed in 2007. Developed as an alternative to Windows 10, BOSS is LSB certified, which means the software is certified by the Linux Foundation for the compliance with the Linux Standard Base standards. Fresh codes have been written for the OS and are being handed over to DEITY (Department of Electronics and Information Technology) to make it foolproof and ready to use for all the ministries. The government has plans to collaborate with the tech-industry giants in future to develop an open source OS hardware and network systems that are BOSS-friendly.

According to a report, it is being developed to overcome the vulnerabilities that exist in the government cyberspace which make it susceptible to attacks from Chinese and Indian hackers. The reports leaked by Edward Snowden had brought to light the vulnerabilities of most countries in the cyberspace. Successful implementation of BOSS will be a huge step ahead in the security infrastructure of the country’s cyberspace.

BOSS is available in 18 languages including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, and Sanskrit.
