Home Guards’ anti-plastic drive, a Namma Pollachi project

‘Namma Pollachi’, a group put together by a few likeminded individuals, came alive a few months ago. It aims at making Pollachi a clean and better place for its residents and tourists. The group also aims at working towards conversation of nature.
Though the group has been involved in various small activities, it was on September 13 that the members of the group launched their big debut project. It was a massive cleaning drive executed at public places of Pollachi. The drive also included spreading awareness among the public about keeping Pollachi clean. And this it did by joining hands with various organisations.
“Namma Pollachi joined hands with about 10 groups and NGOs and it was because of their support and cooperation the aim of this project was achieved.” Tony Philips, Project Coordinator of Namma Pollachi, said.
This cleaning task was taken up to coincide with International Ozone Layer Prevention Day. Coimbatore District Home Guards, Lions Club of Pollachi Liberty, Advancement of Backward Rural Genera Public Trust (ABRG), Rotaract Club of Pollachi, Doctors Club of Pollachi, Arjun College, and Vasavi Club, came together for the anti-plastic awareness drive in Pollachi.
This mega drive was inaugurated by Balaji Raju, Area Commander, Coimbatore District, Home Guards. A team of 60 Home Guards led by Company Commander In-charge Rajasekar and Assistant Platoon Commander Rajkumar, along with others, segregated nearly 48 tonnes of waste from the 15 km stretch. They also collected liquor bottles that were thrown on the forest fringes.
The Home Guards were instrumental in making this cleaning mission a success as they ventured into the forest area and ensured its cleaning. After the clean up mission, the Home Guards also conducted an awareness drive on the hazards of throwing plastic waste and degrading the environment. The team was led by Company Commander Incharge Rajasekar and Assistant Platoon Commander Rajkumar.
Motivated by the success of this project, Namma Pollachi plans to launch its next big project on October 2.
