At a time, when people are complaining about the on going construction work at Gandhipuram, an architect has come out with a proposal to make good use of the pillars of the flyovers.

Namrata, who has been associated with Chennai Metro Rail project, says the pillars can be used to develop vertical gardens. “There is absolutely no green cover in Gandhipuram. If vertical gardens are developed here, they will add beauty to the city,” she says.

Incidentally, Namrata is also a winner of Make Your City Smart contest in Coimbatore.

“People are aware such things. But nobody is interested in initiating a discussion. Vertical gardens are very popular in Mumbai and Bangalore and in many other countries.”

Also the space under the flyovers can be used to improve pedestrian connectivity. “The pillars can be used to exhibit street art which would also help in promoting the art.”

When asked what was the response from the officials, she said they were considering it seriously. “The discussions are in the initial stages. I have also told them to use the pillar for commercial advertisements, which would fetch revenue for the Government. Let us see,” she says.
