Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) today thanked Union Urban Development and Housing Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu for selecting Tirupur under the Smart City Mission.

“This will go a long way in the development of infrastructure in the happening city Tirupur and give impetus for its vibrancy,” TEA President, Raja M. Shanmugam said in a statement.

Tirupur has achieved an export turnover of Rs.25,000 crore and domestic turnover of Rs.12,000 crore in 2016–17 and all these achievements have been made without having much infrastructure, mainly needed for a city to have this feat, he added.

Stating that the exporters have set a target of reaching Rs.one lakh crore business by 2020, Raja Shanmugam said the development of better infrastructure in Tirupur city through Smart City Mission will also help to reach our target. The roads and construction of bridges including bridges over Noyyal River have to be given utmost priority to smoothen the traffic movement.

The population of Tirupur city has exceeded one million and is growing continuously, thanks to inflow of migrants labours, who need better housing facilities, labour quarters including amenities such as water, road facilities, he said.
