Despite fighting hard to manage debris dumping along the bunds of wetlands in the city, the Corporation has bagged an award for solid waste management for its zero waste projects carried out in some wards.

Skoch, a Gurgaon-based independent group dealing with social issues has awarded the Coimbatore Corporation with the Skoch Order of Merit Award for the project. The corporation had previously introduced the Zero Waste Project (Sunya Project) in RS Puram, in which the solid wastes that are generated are recycled in order to reduce the amount of waste being dumped in Vellalore dump yard.

The project was eventually replicated in other wards based on its success. The sanitary workers of the ward collect solid wastes from the doorstep of every household.

The Corporation and the zonal officials will further do a presentation of the project in Delhi today and on Wednesday and if the work of the Corporation is laudable, they would be qualified to receive the Skoch Governance Award.

It may be noted that the Coimbatore Corporation received the e-governance award from Skoch for its e-governance portal.
