New Delhi: Reacting to a letter being circulated online, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India said that the circulation of the letter before the Karnataka elections was a disgraceful ploy.

The letter was attributed to Cardinal Oswald Gracias and as having been written by him to Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bengaluru and it made allegations about the church involvement in the Lingayat issue.

In a press release, Rev Theodore Mascarenhas, the Secretary General of CBCI, said, “It will be noticed that the letter is not written on a letterhead and the letter carries no signature. The CBCI will never ever indulge in divisive tactics as indicated in the letter.”

He further added that the language mistakes in that letter point out that it could not have originated from their office. The Secretary General clarified that Cardinal Oswald Gracias is the President of CBCI and not the Secretary General as alleged by those who are circulating the letter.

“We reserve the right to take legal action against those involved making and promoting that letter,” he said.
