Sandalwood smuggler shot at for entering army area in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Army personnel at the Banaswadi Military Garrison in east Bengaluru opened fired on a man, part of a gang of five, trying to steal sandalwood from the army area in the wee hours of Monday.

Four other associates of the man managed to flee in the incident which occurred at 3.20am. The injured man, Ramar P, is a resident of Thandavambat village of Tamil Nadu, reported Times of India.

Police have filed a case of attempt to murder against Ramar and his associates for allegedly hurling stones and attacking army personnel. The five men, who trespassed into the army campus, were spotted by a patrolling team.

On spotting the team, the five allegedly pelted stones and assaulted the personnel with axes and iron bars. “The leader of the team ordered the intruders to be fired at below their waist. Ramar was injured in the left thigh while others managed to flee,” an official reportedly said.

Ramar was shifted to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital. Officials seized 12kg of sandalwood, cutting blades and other tools from the spot.
