24 persons involved in dumping medical waste in farmland remanded

Twenty four persons were today remanded to judicial custody, for their involvement in dumping medical waste from Kerala in a farmland near Ettimadai on the city outskirts, a few days ago.

Based on the information from the public, police seized lorries containing medical waste proceeding to the land belonging to one Chellappan Gounder in Nellikode on October 25.

Police arrested Chellappan and Mohammed Iliyas, a contractor from Kerala, who had taken the land on lease for dumping, segregating the waste and recycling and selling to prospective customers.

Meanwhile, 22 drivers of the seized lorries, were arrested from various parts of Kerala last night and all the arrested were produced before the Judicial Magistrate here this morning.

The magistrate remanded them till November 10 and they are lodged in the Central Jail here.
