Brain dead person saves 6 lives

Coimbatore : A 25-year-old brain dead man gave a new lease of life to six persons, by donating his vital organs here.

Manoj Kumar, a city resident, had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury after he fell from his two-wheeler while driving back home on April 13.

Neurosurgeons and critical care team of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital strove hard to salvage his life. However, in view of the severe nature of the injury, he became brain dead and a series of tests called “apnoea” performed by experts in the field confirmed “brain death”.

His family came forward to donate his his heart, liver, kidneys and eyes to save the lives of six other people, a hospital release said Monday.

After mandatory legal permission from Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu, the multi organs were harvested on April 16 and one of his kidneys was transplanted on a patient at the hospital, it said.

The heart, liver, other kidney and both eyes were donated to patients in other hospitals as per government rota, the release said.
