The AITUC Construction Workers Union State General Secretary, K Ravi said that the construction sector and labourers were seriously affected due to the recent rains and resultant floods in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

Builders and people who borrowed money to construct the houses were in trouble because the raw materials and other equipment were washed away in the floods, he said. He also demanded that the government pay a compensation of Rs.10,000 to the workers because there was a provision in the Construction Workers Welfare Board to this effect.

Ravi also criticized the centre for not declaring the districts of Tamil Nadu as flood-affected, because such an announcement would have benefited the workers.
