Chennai: Life convict in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case Nalini Sriharan has launched a hunger strike in Vellore prison demanding that she be shifted to Chennai jail. This is to take up various activities in connection with her daughter’s marriage.

At present, Nalini’s daughter Harithra, who is living in UK, plans to visit Chennai for her marriage.

Recently, Nalini submitted a petition to prison authorities seeking parole for six months. With prison officials rejecting her plea, Nalini informed the jail superintendent that she would go on hunger strike inside the prison seeking shifting to Puzhal prison in Chennai.

Nalani’s husband, who is also convicted in Rajiv Gandhi murder case, is lodged in Vellore central prison.

In her 26 years of incarceration, Nalini got parole twice. In 2004, she got parole to attend the marriage of her brother. In 2016, she got the second one to attend the last rites of her father.

Nalini was sentenced to death by the trial court in the case on January, 28, 1998. However, her sentence was commuted to life term by the Governor on April, 24, 2000.

In 2015, Nalini moved Madras High Court seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu government to consider her representation for premature release, saying she had undergone imprisonment for more than 24 years.
