Tension prevailed for a while near the old bus stand in Thanjavur today as the DMK cadre burnt the effigy of Assembly Speaker Dhanapal. They condemned the suspension of 89 DMK MLAs including the Leader of the Opposition, M.K. Stalin, from the House for a week.

Led by the party’s urban town secretary T.K.G. Neelamegam, the cadre gathered in front of the old bus stand and raised slogans against the Speaker for suspending the MLAs. Later, they burnt the effigy of Dhanapal and blocked the traffic leading to disruption of vehicular traffic for more than an hour. Police arrested 60 persons including seven women.
