Girl ends life after parents pressurise her to marriage

A 23-year-old girl who wanted to become a social worker committed suicide in the city on Wednesday evening after her parents forced her to marry.

According to police sources, Swathwika, the daughter of Sivakumar of Singanallur was living with parents. She was bent on becoming a social worker, inspired by the services of Mother Theresa. When she made known her intention, her parents arranged for her marriage which was against her wish. Police said that mental stress as result of the decision of her parents made kept her from mingling with family members. On September 20, she took the extreme step and committed suicide by hanging in her house.

Based on the complaint of her father, Singanallur police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and investigations are on.
