Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam Government Hospital , established by the British in the 19th century, created history by conducting its first-ever implant surgery.

Dr S. Seralathan, who conducted the surgery where a metal part was put inside the body replacing the natural one, said, “The surgery was done on a eight-year-old boy who had a hip fracture and replacement was done through a surgical procedure called hemiarthroplasty . As part of this procedure half of the hip is joined with a prosthetic while the other part is left intact. Hip joints have a ball and socket type of joints.

The ball part was damaged so it was removed and a metal one implanted. This is the first time we are doing it at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital though it might have been done in Coimbatore Medical College.”

He added that the hospital was preparing to conduct a total hip replacement surgery in a day or two where the entire ball and socket would be implanted.

The patient needed to have physiotherapy exercises at the hospital or at home and should not lift heavy objects. The common complications that could arise after surgery could be infection.

Since it was a government hospital there could be no restrictions on the visitors and hence chances of infection was high, he added.
