Coimbatore : An 86-year old man, who was sentenced to life term in connection with a murder 27 years ago and on bail now, was arrested on Tuesday and lodged in the Central Jail after Supreme Court recently upheld his sentence.

Bilal Hajiyar of the city was one among the 10 persons arrested in connection with the murder of a Hindu Munnani activist Shiva on September 5, 1991, when he was going on Mill Road here.

A police personnel, who witnessed the murder, also was attacked by the gang.

A sessions court had sentenced eight accused to undergo life imprisonment and acquitted two in the case in 2000.

All the accused appealed in Madras High Court against the sentence, which upheld the verdict in 2008, following which they moved Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Hajiyar considering his age.

The Supreme Court upheld the verdict of Madras High court on October 10, based on which police decided to take Hajiyar into custody.

Armed with Court order, CBCID-SIT arrested Hajiyar and produced him before 5th Additional District Judge T Malarvalantina, on whose order the convict was taken and lodged in the Central Jail here.
