Hindu and Muslim organisations took part in a recent peace committee meeting held to ensure peace during the Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations in Coimbatore. The meeting was called for by the District Administration.

The organisations asked the District Administration to close TASMAC shops during the procession.

Members from Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), MMK and Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam said they would support the celebrations.

Tamil Nadu Vishwa Hindu Parishad functionary Balakalidhass requested the police to allow them to install Vinayaga idols in various parts of the city. But they were denied permission.

A Sadiq Ali from Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) said Vinayaga Chathurthi had been celebrated without any problems for the last three years in Coimbatore. “Muslims would cooperate to ensure that it is celebrated in a grand manner,” he said.
