The three day dharna by nurses in Kangeyam in nearby Tirupur district seeking inquiry into the suicide by their colleague, today withdrew following assurance given by Health Department officials that an inquiry would be conducted on the circumstances leading to the suicide.

The MRB nurses in Kangeyam and Vellakoil government hospitals, were on a sit-in dharna for the last three days. This follows the suicide by 26-year old Manimala of Vellakoil Primary Health Centre who hanged herself. The nurses sought stringent action against two doctors, who reportedly harassed her, police said.

Seeking similar action, the relatives also refused to receive the body after postmortem in Kangeyam hospital.

Joint Director of Medical Services, Vadivel, today met and discussed with the agitating nurses and assured to take action against the erring doctors and also promised a government job to a family member.

Accordingly, the department transferred the Medical Officer Damayanthi and Dr.Sakthi Akhilandeshwari to the centres in Erode and Dindigul districts, following which the relatives accepted the body of Manimala, who committed suicide by hanging in her room in the quarters in Vellokoil on February 11.
