Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition where increased eye pressure damages the optic nerve without noticeable symptoms, leading to permanent vision loss over time. It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.

To raise awareness about this condition, The Eye Foundation, one of South India’s leading eye specialty hospital chains, is observing World Glaucoma Week from March 10 to 15. The hospital has planned a series of awareness activities and free consultations to help reduce the burden of the disease.

A press conference regarding this was held at The Eye Foundation – Coimbatore on Friday. It was chaired by Dr. R. Chitra, Medical Director of The Eye Foundation while Dr. Muralidhar, Glaucoma & Paediatric Ophthalmology Expert at The Eye Foundation also joined the event.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Dr. R. Chitra, emphasized that while individuals above 40 are generally considered at higher risk, glaucoma is not age-specific. Even newborns and children can develop the condition due to genetic factors or other medical reasons.

She further highlighted that individuals with diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, long-term steroid use, and those with previous eye injuries are also at risk. Since glaucoma-related damage is irreversible, early detection is critical to preserving remaining vision. Various treatment options are available to manage the condition effectively if diagnosed in time.

One of the latest advancements in glaucoma treatment is Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), which offers smaller incisions, faster recovery, and fewer complications compared to traditional surgical methods. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who do not respond well to medication or laser treatments.

As part of World Glaucoma Week, The Eye Foundation will provide free glaucoma consultations across its 25 centers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala from March 10 to 15. During this week, patients will receive 10% discount on investigations and surgical procedures while their blood relatives will receive a 50% discount on glaucoma consultations.

Since glaucoma screening usually takes just 30 minutes, the public is encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to assess their risk. To further spread awareness, a human chain demonstration will be organized on March 12 in the city, emphasizing the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
