A newly-married young woman committed suicide by hanging herself after her husband reportedly scolded her for spending excessive time on social networking websites likes Facebook and Whatsapp.

The woman, 20-year-old Aparna, was from Kerala and had got married to lorry driver Saravana Kumar from Kaundampalayam a few months ago. She was living with her in-laws after the wedding. Saravana Kumar had to frequently go out on duty.

The fact that Aparna was spending a lot of time on websites like Facebook soon became a constant source of arguments between the two. In one such argument yesterday, Saravana Kumar took her mobile phone away. After complaining to her elder brother about the incident, Aparna locked herself up in her room and refused to open the door despite desperate pleas from her in-laws. By the time her husband broke the door open, she had committed suicide by hanging herself with her dupatta.

She was taken to the hospital, but was declared brought dead. The body was taken for post-mortem to the Government Hospital. Anguished by his wife’s suicide, Saravana Kumar attempted to kill himself by jumping off the house terrace, but he was stopped by his relatives.

The police are investigating.
