Coimbatore : DMK working president M K Stalin will lead a demonstration in the city tomorrow, protesting against the police action in registering false cases against 10 party workers and arresting some of them in the gutka manufacturing unit issue here.

Police arrested seven DMK workers on charges of obstructing them while carrying out their duty during the raid on the unit on April 27 in Kannampalayam on the outskirts. Police are on the lookout for party MLA Karthik and two others.

They also suspect the involvement of Dalapati Murugesan, one among the seven arrested. He, during his term as panchayat president, is suspected to have helped the owner Amit Jain carrying out illegal manufacturing of gutka on the premises, which has no industrial licence or pollution board clearance.

DMK workers had attempted to lay siege of the office of Superintendent of Police P Murthy for allegedly implicating party functionaries, reportedly to save a Tamil Nadu Minister and a high ranking police official, whose names were doing rounds in connection with gutka scam for which Madras High Court had directed ordering a CBI inquiry.

Stalin would lead the demonstration and address hundreds of workers drawn from party’s student, women and advocates wing and minority cell, party sources said.

Meanwhile, a large number of police entered the sealed gutka godown this morning, reportedly to pack the finished products and raw materials seized during the raid, which would be produced in court.

However, DMK sources said this was being done without the knowledge of the local tahsildar and food safety department officials and to destroy evidence.
