Relief for Centre, Top Court Clears Way For SC/ST Quota In Job Promotions

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the 2006 Nagaraj verdict giving quota benefits in job promotions for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes need not be referred to a seven-judge constitution bench. The unanimous judgement was pronounced by a five-judge Constitution bench.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said states need not collect quantifiable data on backwardness for giving quota in job promotion to SC/ST employees.
