The shooter in the YouTube incident has been identified as Nasim Aghdam, a 39-year-old woman, reported NBC. The shooter apparently had a YouTube channel called NasimWonder1 where she even ranted against Google accusing YouTube of discriminating and the filtering her videos. The channel has been now suspended by YouTube, allegedly for violating its terms of conditions. Nasim also had a website at nasimesabz.com.

Nasim allegedly entered the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, the US, and shot at employees. Three YouTube employees have been hurt in the incident. They have been admitted to a local hospital and it has been said that the condition of one is critical.

Nasim, a Middle Eastern woman, was allegedly a vegan and was fairly active on YouTube as well as Facebook. In one of her videos she alleged that YouTube had deliberately limited the reach pf he channel and that the company was filtering and discriminating against her channel. Reports said that she also wrote something about it on Facebook, saying “There is not equal growth opportunity on YouTube.”

The sentiments surely resonate with thousands of the YouTubers who believe that the algorithms of YouTube – or for that matter with content creators on platforms like Google and Facebook that feel hapless in the face of mysterious algorithms – that big tech companies unfairly restrict, filter out or cut the reach of what they post. Although, picking up a gun and trying to kill people to register your grievance is surely a step too extreme and deranged.

Earlier reported noted that the woman approached an outdoor patio and dining courtyard on the YouTube campus around lunchtime and began to fire before entering the building.

The San Jose Mercury News, citing a law enforcement source, said that the women was targeting her boyfriend due to a domestic dispute.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the incident unimaginable tragedy. Earlier this afternoon, while our employees were having lunch, we received reports of an active shooter at YouTube in San Bruno,” he wrote in an email to employees. “I know a lot of you are in shock right now. Over the coming days, we will continue to provide support to help everyone in our Google family heal from this unimaginable tragedy.”
